Default Re: How would you record...

If this project is a closed recording not done with a live audience, I would be very, very tempted to do it with close mics, or at least section mics...one mic for every pair of players or so.

I've done close and section mics for both opera and live symphonies, and the results are always better. I did a live symphony last spring with 45 mics iirc, and the end product sounded way better than the full ensemble minimal micing approach. Of course, it takes a lot more post production work for the close mixing approach.

Thank you, Justice. I will probably shoot for a blend between ensemble and section mics, but I will discuss it further with the conductor. He seems to have a specific sound in mind.

I have to rent some equipment for this project, and have to think about how to get the best result, within budget. I've asked for recordings that have the kind of sound/production they're looking for.

I run a small studio, and my own mic selection is sparse.

Miktek CV4, Rode K2, AKG Solidtube, Blue Baby Bottle, Blue Woodpecker, Shure SM7B, Shure SM57's, a pair of DPA 4090's, and a pair of Josephson C42's.

Due to budget and availability, I will have to do this project with a pair of DPA 4006's, a pair of DPA 4015's, and a spot mic on the drum kit/percussion.

Never used the DPAs, so I don't know what to expect. Thoughts?

Thank you for all tips so far.
