Default Fast Track Ultra and Multiple Keyboards Live

I want to use my fast track ultra with protools and my laptop for live performances. I can easily create a pro tools session and add an instrument track with my keyboard sound as an insert on the track. THen I just play using my keyboard controller.

My problem is that I need to have multiple leyboard sounds for each song (piano and organ).

How can I connect 2 keyboard controlers to my fast track ultra / computer so I can setup 2 instrument tracks in protools, with 2 different instrument plugins.

  • Connect both keyboard controllers. (I'm assuming you are using USB controllers? If not, you will need an extra step; purchase a USB MIDI interface)
  • create 2 instrument tracks
  • insert your different instruments on each track and select your sounds
  • On the first one, select your first keyboard as the MIDI input
  • On the second one, select your second keyboard as the MIDI input
  • Make sure that you don't have Pro Tools set up to use the first selectedtrack as the default thru instrument. (Setup->Preferences MIDI tab)
  • record arm each track.
That should be all you need to do.

Great!

I am connecting my keyboard controller through USB directly into the computer. However, my controller does have a MIDI out connection. Would it be better to get an extra USB Midi interface and connect both keyboards to that? Instead of connecting both keyboards to the computer?

No. It would be the exact same thing.
