Default Re: How to copy midi velocities, NOT notes

You can do this in PT, but it's not as simple as selecting a single note, copying it's velocity, selecting another note, and pasting that velocity.

The way you do it in PT is

1) select your source MIDI notes as a Timeline selection (lassoing individual notes won't work)

2) open Beat Detective

3) set operation mode to MIDI & Groove Template Extraction

4) capture the selection

5) hit analyse, and then hit extract

6) save the groove template

7 select your destination MIDI

8) open Event Operations - Quantize

9) under Quantize Grid, choose the groove template you created, and under options deselect everything except Velocity (set strength slider to 100%)

10) hit apply.

This will do what you want it to, although it's not great with chords - usually making all notes in the chord the same velocity - you may be able to improve upon that by experimenting with how Beat Detective analyses and captures the groove (normal mode vs collection mode, loudest vs first note etc) and the strength by which Event Operations quantises the velocity etc.

In Cubase it is done similarly using Groove Quantize: you select the source midi part (clip), create a Groove in the Edit>Advanced Quantize menu, then select destination midi part and apply the just created Groove by zeroing all parameters except for Velocity.

PD: BTW no, you cannot copy and paste velocity in Cakewalk, not ever.

Shucks!

It still amazes / frustrates me that this exactly where the MIDI events list SHOULD excel, but instead is even less useful than a step sequencer.

On an even more basic level, it ought to be possible to select a bunch of notes whilst in velocity view, choose "Copy Special", and then use "Paste Special" on the destination MIDI - the basic mechanism is already there.

Or just swiping any controller / automation lane (when displayed beneath the track) to copy, and paste to the same type on any track, anywhere in the timeline.

Anyway, thankfully what the OP wants is achievable with Beat Detective's MIDI groove extraction, but it should be so much easier, and less of a dark art.
