Although all of the facts are still not known here, the estimates of how many homes got water in them in the entire metro area is between 40,000 to 100,000. Some of the homes would have had "only" a few inches, others much more. So out of a metropolitan area of 6.5 million people, the vast majority of us have no water damage at all. Likewise, only about 100,000 customers are still without power, since they won't get in to the flooded areas to restore power till the water drains off.

For those affected, of course it is very bad, and many homes who never came close to flooding in the past, did flood this time because of the record rainfall from this storm (50 inches in some areas). The surrounding areas have grown in population tremendously over the years and will continue to grow, paving over what was marshlands or rice fields, so the flood threat will continue to be there in future storms.

As one of our local weather reporters replied when asked why the Houston area is so prone to flooding - "what do you expect when you pave over a swamp with concrete."
