Pro Tools 12 Clip Gain Issues?

Stereo mic'd acoustic guitar audio track. Clip Gain is only affecting the right channel? How do you even do that if you wanted to? And before that when I moved Clip Gain the number would always bounce back to 0dB instead of showing how much I moved it. Thanks for any suggestions... At this point I have cleared clip gain but it looks like some clips are off balance now perhaps I did not notice it doing that as I was going along.

Are the levels matched? The gain of the pre's ?

Why don't you break them out into, dual mono? How do they react as a mono track?

Hi there. Yes I guess I could break them out. My question/problem is, why is clip gain only changing one side of a stereo track? From what I understand about how it is supposed to work this is impossible even if you WANT to do it. And I don't, lol. I want to bump the gain a bit on both channels simultaneously. So it poses a problem, I NEED both sides to change by the same amount.

That being said, thanks for the suggestion to split them out. I might as well get busy on that and move forward. But for the sake of science and Pro Tools expertise I would love to understand what the issue is here.

That's a weird problem, I haven't encountered that before. I use clip gain on stereo tracks all the time with no problem. As a workaround, try selecting the regions and hit command option G to group them. Then try the clip gain and see if it fixes the problem.

I agree it's weird, but I am curious how it behaves in mono.?

But yes it should work fine in stereo, and it probably does usually work correctly for you as well

One thing nobody has mentioned; does it SOUND like its only adjusting one side? Just wondering if it might be a graphics issue instead of a PT issue?

Fantastic idea there--yes, it is definitely only changing one side.

Because when you group regions it gives the group it's own clip gain that affects all the contents of the clip group. So if you are using clip gain and it is only turning down 1 side of the stereo pair, perhaps grouping the region will affect all inside it, i.e. both sides of the stereo pair.

One thing I have noticed is if the track you are working on is at the bottom of the monitor, when you click on the clip gain fader it may bounce to an arbitrary value - usually a positive one - as the draw function for the fader will be offset due to the boundary of the monitor. Scroll the edit window so your track is near the middle - or at least not at the bottom.

If your stereo clip isn't the exact same length on both channels this behavior may happen. I know if I get an .aaf from a less than experienced editor who has laid in audio on a stereo track with different length clips in L and R it really causes problems. Try clipping a very small region from the head and tail to be sure of matching lengths.
