Default Midi note input before grid point problem!

Hi, not sure if this has already been covered but I couldn't find any posts about it.

I've had this annoying problem for years and have never solved it. Basically when inputting midi notes in grid mode, PT seems to sometimes put the start of the note just a tiny bit before the grid line so that when I go to select a region, for example to duplicate a bar, some of the notes at the start of the selected region don't get selected. Duplicating/copying sections in region mode results in the same problem.

This also causes problems if there is the same note repeated directly before, as the overlap causes the offending early placed note not to be retriggered.

To get around this I have to zoom in on the offending notes and trim them back to the grid line where they are supposed to be. I'm currently using Pro Tools & Kontakt to write an orchestral film score with about 20 parts/midi tracks, so this continual re-trimming is getting very tedious and time consuming.

I've got a feeling this is just a built in bug and if I upgraded to PT 8 it would probably be fixed but I don't have time to upgrade OS X and PT and then deal with all the plug-in/software incompatibilities that will inevitably crop up.

Is there a way to set the midi note start point? I'd even be happy with all notes starting a few samples late...

I'm running Pro Tools LE on an original Mbox with OSX 10.4.11

Thanks in advance!!

This is a stupid question but have you checked to see what your grid is set at (1/4, 1/2, 1/8 notes)?

Yep I frequently change the grid value but that shouldn't make any difference to the start point of the note should it?? Anybody have any ideas? Digidesign - any chance you guys could fix this?

This is a very old and persistent problem.

I have seen it from early vs 6 days.

Is this still a problem when you quantise the notes in grid mode?

in pt 8 is a little easier to work around this than in previous version
and yes even after quantizing the notes there's always that problem.

a good way to deal with this is to set the HW buffer to 256 or mayb lower

Its funny because i been seeing this problem for years but i thought is just me
that had the timing problem

It is a PITA but in 8 it's easily fixed. Open the track in midi editor and click on all the selected notes, it then aligns them all the grid and then the cutting in the edit window works. I use it more than quantize.

What exactly is the problem? The OP's problem involves having to trim notes that are early. Most likely cause is a simple one and not a mysterious timing bug, i.e. they were played early, the hardware buffer is set too high, they are not quantised. My notes are all spot on to the grid when quantised. Can someone explain more clearly what this so-called persistant midi problem is?

I don't play them in, I pencil them in. So, in grid mode with the pencil tool, I click on a spot in the bar where I want a note and it draws it, but that note sometimes is in the right spot and sometimes looks likes its in the right spot but is just a tiny tiny imperceptible bit early so therefore isn't selected if the selection starts at that grid line. When I'm writing a detailed complex arrangement, theres hundreds and hundreds of midi notes that I've penciled in, some of which won't be selected when I select a section in grid mode to duplicate or copy etc. Really annoying.
