Default Alesis AI3

Is anyone using it and is it much better than the 001?

We here at the Miskatonic Institute for the Recording Arts feel that the Alesis AI-3 is a significant improvement over the Digi001 converters, and a good value. We are using it in conjunction with a Lucid AD9624/DA9624 pair, using the Lucid AD9624 as a 48 KHz master clock. Any one or two channel tracking is done through the Lucid AD9624, using the AI-3 mainly when tracking drums. As we have recently made a commitment to mixing "in the box", and consequently have no need for the AI-3's eight channels of D/A, we are considering a move to a higher quality eight channel A/D only. The AI-3 has, however, served us well.

Yours sincerely,

Lurker

I have an Ai-3 I havent noticed a big difference between it and the 001. Very similar in sound to me. For the price its a nice unit that will get you eight more inputs.

I think the convertors are a bit cleaner, but I've noticed they dont have as much headroom as the Digi's A/D's. It'll have to do for now though and I'm not unhappy with it. I typically use the AI3 (LitePipe) and SPDIF channels before going to the Digi's if I need more than 10 channels.

I have had an ai-3 for a few years now. I haven't really noticed a big difference between it and the 001. Maybe a little better in the highs. The alesis is actually a little noisier. This is only apparent in extreme situations of some pretty wacky gain stages, but it is a hair noisier. Hope that helps.

So if I have a little more money I should probably go for the Octo Pre?
