PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
Hello DUC:
As my computer reboots during the PT 7.3.1cs6 upgrade, I thought I'd ask the brave 7.4 users out there whether there is an overall performance hit going to 7.4 from 7.3. My understanding is that Elastic Time is more disk intensive, but if you leave it off, are all the editing and playback functions of PT just as snappy as they were in 7.3? Since I have a dual 2.7Ghz G5, I'm more interested in hearing from other PPC users. Thanks in advance, Nathaniel Reichman www.nathanielreichman.com

Re: PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
I have a G52x2,3 PCI-x and a G5 4x2,5 PCI-e. They both have 4gb ram and OS 10.4.11 (I think) Upgraded both to 7.4 and I have elastic time turned on. I was expecting it to slow down my systems, but I don't think it's necessary to turn elastic time off. I haven't noticed that performance has been reduced at all. I haven't made any measuring, it's just my feeling.

Re: PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
If anything on my system it seems to be better than 7.3 ever was. It's certainly more stable for me and it's way more fun to use!

Re: PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
Thanks guys. This is really good info. I've been holding off because everything in 7.3.1cs5 has been so smooth. Maybe I'll make the leap to 7.4 now.

Re: PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
PPC Dual 2.7 here. 7.4cs2 Working well.
• EA live√ • EA rendered a bit of a slowdown in work flow. • Committing a long section will be faster to re-record over to new tracks than commit. Then make inactive the EA tracks. 8 Drum tracks for a 9 min. Song took more than a half hour to commit! Busing and recording took 12 min. |

Re: PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
I went from 7.2 straight to 7.4.
I thought 7.2 was snappy and extremely stable. So far I haven't noticed a difference in performance. PT 7.4cs2 PPC G5 dual 2 OS 10.4.11 |

Re: PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
one problem i've been having that i can't seem to find is, when i hit 3 to record, the record and play buttons blink and it waits like 5 seconds then starts just fine. If i hit play then record (in quick punch) it starts immediately. I feel like i'm just being dumb and can't find something i clicked somewhere.

Re: PT 7.3 vs. PT 7.4 PPC performance?
Thought I'd follow up on my previous post. After 4 days of solid work in Pro Tools LE 7.4cs2, I'm very happy I upgraded. There are more parameters to tweak in the Playback Engine menu, so in some circumstances (editing), one can configure 7.4 to be even faster than 7.3. All my old sessions sound fine.
And what I find interesting are the unadvertised fixes in this version: drag and drop from the Finder is smoother (the occasional crash seems to be gone), and using the key command opt-cmd-left arrow for play with pre and post roll is much quicker. The function is the same, but the underlying code seems to have changed. SoundMiner 3.2cs10 works fine. I have yet to listen closely to Elastic Time to see if it's comparable to Pitch 'n' Time Pro, any opinions on this? I was crashing about twice a week in 7.3.1cs5. No crashes at all with 7.4cs2 since installation. Thumbs up for Digidesign! Best, Nathaniel Reichman
