Default file size limit at 192k

PT has always had a single-file size limit of 2 GB. Does this limitation
still apply to PT HD, which at 192k yields only 64 minutes of recording time
per mono file (32 minutes stereo)? Even on HFS+ drives and OS 9.2?

Seems like the system's usefulness for tracking at higher sample rates might be a bit limited.

The maximum file size of 2GB is a current limitation of the Mac OS (or at least for 9.x and earlier). Therefore, this value still applies.

Also consider that stereo files in Pro tools are actually dual mono files, so the 32 minutes limit doesn't apply.

But I've seen quicktime/final cut video files that are 4 or 5 gigs on a quicksilver running 9.2.2... why is that?

I do believe the 2 gig limit is application limited, not the OS.

Final cut is capable of creating and working files larger than 2 gig.

definately not the OS limitation. this used to be, but not for a while. I think os9 did away with it as well as the number of files per document limit (the old bane of powermix and 442 users). Using os 9.2.1, I routinely have video files in excess of 10 gigs with no trouble at all. Does protools limit the file size to 2 gigs? that would suck.

I remembered that I've been using PT files larger than 2G in one file. However, when I was doing the Gain or Normalizing, the PT would quit suddenly -error type -2. maybe this 2G limit stuff is the main reason that brought my G4 into crashes..

G4/733, 640MB Ram, PT 5.1.1, Mac OS 9.2.2.

uno1234 - Good catch on the stereo / dual - mono issue.

I'm a bit concerned that the 64-minute limit would cause me some grief, especially when recording classical artists, the market most interested in HD recordings. It's very common for me to let PT record for well over two hours during a live performance or rehersal. I realize that I could quickly start and stop the recording between pieces or movements, but it's certainly risky and something I'd very much like to avoid.

Well, I believe that it has something to do with the os, because even Apple's own iMovie has this same limit (at least in OS9).

Digi--some users disagree and say the limitation is PT, not OS 9.x.

Could you please address this issue. And would you please pass this concern on to those working on OS X support.

This problem, like any other, can be worked around now that I know it. But will I remember it, or even know that it is going to be a problem in a live recording until it is too late? It sure would be nice is the new software fixed it for us. If there must be a limit, it seems to me 90 minutes would be ok; 120 minutes would be great.

Many thanks.

FWIW:
We found that the 2gig file limit seems to be a restriction to HFS. HFS+ does allow up to 2 terabyte files according to apple:
http://kbase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/...ID=9327&dialog Id=117429625&sid=9321589

So 1+hrs @ 192k ought to work OK (my god can you imagine a 2 terabyte file!)
