Default G4 Titanium and G4 Tower

Hi-

I am looking for the best way to connect these two computers from time to time in order to easily do back ups and copy data. I tried doing the ethernet thing but had no success up to now.

If any one has any info on this I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Assuming both have firewire...

I've got an OS X only powerbook and if you hold down T while it's booting up - it becomes a firewire drive, you can then just plug a firewire cable between the two machines and drag and drop away.

Did this yesterday and it works perfectly, just remember to eject the firewire drive before disconnecting (select drive and hit apple e).

Don't know if this will work for you - but worth a go.

Very fast too.

Pete

peteri is correct and it works great.

Here's an Apple document on FireWire Target Disk mode.

Tried it and it works like a charm. But that is a good question about the ethernet thing. However this way has got to be alot easier than setting up for ethernet.

Thanks again guys.

Be cautious tho'.. don't connect the FireWire cable while either Mac is powered up or sleeping.. I smoked the logic boards in both Macs by doing that.

Unless you have gigabit ethernet, FireWire is faster in all cases. The advantage of ethernet is that it can be always connected and that it doesn't require you to restart one of the G4s to activte it.

What did you try in order to get ethernet going?

PS. I just read the doc on FW targets (TDM!). That is so incredibly cool!

Soon, Apple will be releasing TCP-IP over FireWire. They have it for their XServer already. Then, your Macs could stay connected over FireWire.
