Not if he goes and properly set the sound playback and the properties tab for windows as I pointed out. This way windows is defaulted to use the interface and will use it with the right bit and sampling as the interface is set, which is mostly the reasons for glitches as people do not tend to set those right. Back in the days when I had a fast track, I would do these and had 0 problem playing windows and other programs sounds through the fast track.

Unfortunately, Windows will change these settings at will. And Protools then can't override them.

For example, pop in a CD and watch the sample rate setting change to 44.1. Then open a PT session at 48 and you get an error.

Manually resetting the Windows setting does fix the problem but you might have to do it all the time.

Setting the default device to something other than the one being used for ProTools solves the problem and the setting never clash. Until Windows/Motherboard changes the default device! Arghhh!

BTW I only had this problem in Windows 7. Windows XP did not behave this way on the same exact computer/hardware.

Funny that you would say that, I had to pop in a cd today that a client brought in to listen to and I didn't have that problem. I'm using win 7 ultimate though, so maybe for proffesional and ultimate there's a different vs media and home. But my settings have been set this way since I have windows 7 and I have had 0 problems with it.

That means that either:

Whatever software/driver you used to play the audio on the CD was smart enough to remember the state of the Windows audio software device and set it back after it was done. Just a few lines of code that make all the difference!

or, Windows is doing a software re-sample to adjust the CD audio to whatever the interface was set for.

More detail here:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/For...diodevelopment

But Windows 7 won't change the sample rate of the hardware audio interface to match the audio signal (like Windows XP used to).

Meanwhile, if one does NOT set the interface as default, then windows does not have control over it and PT is free to adjust its sample rate as it wants and so the two do not clash. When set as default, PT cannot override the windows settings.
