Avid Core Audio with HDX/HD Native on Yosemite/later Mac OS

Yeah PT works fine with 3rd party core audio.....

The problem is with Avid interfaces....

But as always check with the 3rd party OEM's for updated drivers etcetera

Ok in an attempt to clarify what seems to be some confusion


The Core Audio "issue" being talked about in this thread pertains only to:

Avid HD hardward interfaces. Because of an HD driver problem
while running Mac OSX - Yosemite or El Capitan

It does not apply to any other types of hardware interfaces either Avid or third party. Nor does it apply Avid hardware running on Mac OSX. 10.9.5 Mavericks and earlier

Nor does it apply to running the sound coming from Pro Tools sessions.

The issue is not being able to run a sound source coming from outside of Pro Tools (i.e. iTunes - Sound cloud - Youtube etc. and apparently other DAWs) through the Avid HD hardware system.

Avid has said they will be issuing a Driver update fix for this but have Not said when ?? And the frustration for those of us who own Avid HD hardware is that it has been going on since Apple introduced Yosemity.

Thanks Kev, so the issue relates to using virtual busses, i.e. routing signals from one application to another, is that correct?

I'm using an Apogee I/O system and really like being able to, for example, route the output of VLC player (DVDs) through Apogee "V-buses" into Nuendo to make use of my surround system (bass managed and calibrated with Waves Surround plugins within output channels of Nuendo).

It sounds like I might suffer from the limitation/bug being described!

I would say no, the issue is not about routing from one app to another per se . The issue is that the CoreAudio drivers specifically for AVID Brand HD I/O hardware (ONLY) and only when used with OSX Yosemite and El cap will not play third party sound through the Avid hardware . For example lets say you have finished mixing a session in PTHD Native you have an Avid HD OMNI that is your interface and drives your monitoring speakers and you want to see how the session will translate. So you bounce the session out to the desk top, close PT altogether, drag the session into I tunes as MP3 and then want to see how that sounds back through your Avid HD Omni and monitor speakers... you can't do it.

If what you are asking is, in your above situation (using Apogee hardware) , if you were to use PT instead of Nuendo would it be an issue and the answer, I would think would be no..... not a problem.

And yes track freeze has just come with PT 12.4

Quick update I have been completing a System upgrade.

So because of going to PTHDN 12.4 , I had to update my OSX boot drive, to Yosemite 10 .10. 5 .... I was just now testing the CoreAudio and As far as other DAWs ( I was mistaken) it does actually play Reason 8 stand alone through my system, but will not play SoundCloud will test itunes and youtube tommorow

On our HDX Avid HD I/O system Yosemite no problems playing other DAWs (DP, Live, Studio One). Unfortunately iTunes, internet audio, quicktime etc won't work... Much needed fix...
