Default OSX Version Stability

Hi all, long time listener, first time caller.

But seriously, I've got like 4 posts but I've got a legitimate question that I can't find an answer to with searching. I'm getting a lot of faff with Slate VMR hanging when activating and Pro Tools generally hanging on the splash screen before the loading bar starts.

I get hangs that require a force quit when restoring tracks, and I'm pretty sure that VMR is the cause as sessions open fine when I open them with all plugins inactive, and that's always the one that kills everything.

Before diving any further into things, I reckon that a fresh install of EVERYTHING is good shout, as I'm in a week or so break where I don't need my laptop rig (the studio mac is bombproof so far, luckily).

Given that, what is currently the most stable macOS I can be using? 2014ish 10.8.5 was pretty good, but I can't find anything as of late 2016/present day as an update to what's best. I've got a USB with the 10.8 and 10.9 installers floating around somewhere, or I'm willing to find the DMGs if needed to make some. Equally, what's best in the PT11 world?

Current rig
Mid-2009 Macbook Pro 13inch
2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8GB Ram
Yosemite (10.10.3, also a 10.10.5 partition that I can use as my reinstall test bed)
Pro Tools 11.3.1

I appreciate that it's an old machine, but I do the majority of the heavy lifting on a cheese grater mac at the studio.

Any help is greatly appreciated, let me know if there's anything else specifically you need from me!

I've got that same MB...

I just recently refreshed it with 10.8.5....that was a great OS, no drama.

10.10.5 was really good also but I don't think it was quantifiably "better" than 10.8.5 just a different look.

For PT11 I would go 10.8.5 but that's just my opinion.....

One caveat would be its no longer supported by some 3rd party apps (I've heard) but if you have been mac awhile this is par for the course....unfortunately

I moved my main system back to Win for this very reason....OS compatibility with multiple versions of PT.

Cheers YYR123,

I can try out a clean 10.10.5 immediately, so I'll start there and see how I get on, if not I'll try the rollback. Presumably 11.3.1 is still a good call as far as latest update bug issues?

Actually, 10.10.5 isn't supported by 11.3.1 is it?

Yeah it's not but it's probably fine.

Works but not qualified.

I mean it's qualified for 10.10.3

But that's the game you play......try it and see

Cheers!

Talking software, just logged in to get copies of the installers, and I've got a 12.2 Academic listed that I don't remember. I've no PT12 iLok licence, so is my cynical brain correct in assuming that this is just a ploy by Avid to get me to download then buy it? The 11.3.2 update is in there that I assume I can't have without a subscription too.

Most current NI stuff is not compatible with OSX 10.8.5; the earliest to be safe is OSX 10.9.5

OSX 10.9.5 has been solid as a rock for me for years now. That being said I also have an OSX 10.8.5 boot partition that I use when I need to use NI's B4II organ in PT10.3.1. All the NI vi's and fx on that one are completely separate from the other partition so compatibility is not an issue.

We might include it in the Help Us Help You document, but the discussion is still ongoing. You have a very good point there...
