Default Looks Like I Will Be Staying Indoors!

12 Hours after making landfall north of Corpus Christi as a Category 4 storm, Hurricane Harvey is still a Category 1 storm. Expected to linger around the area until mid week.

The record for rainfall in the U.S. in a 24 hour period is 42 inches in 1979 in Alvin, Texas, 20 miles or so south of Houston.

As long as the power stays on, I should have plenty of time to do some clean-up on some old Pro Tools sessions in the upcoming days.!

Prayers to all in Texas. Stay safe and be aware of power surges so your equipment doesn't fry.

Thanks Jack.

It was a frog strangler overnight. Solid rain currently from here to the Louisiana border. I am in a small sliver of the map not currently getting rain (down near Sugarland, SW of Houston):

"Arkansas rain gauge". This was just overnight Saturday's accumulation as I had emptied it out Saturday afternoon. You may not be able to see the level of rainwater from the angle I took the picture, but it is about 1 inch from the top:

This brings it home. Watching the tv coverage and they mostly show the business areas/downtown of Houston but to see people's homes.....

You don't have basements there do you? Here in most of NJ we do and it's always a worry when the rain just won't stop. The day after Superstorm Sandy hit the wife and I took a walk around the neighborhood and about all one could hear was portable generators running to pump out basements.

Love the rain gauge - no need to get fancy with one. I've seen them built out of 2 liter Coke bottles and some rocks to hold the bottle down.

No basements here due to the clay soil that holds too must moisture. Large buildings may have basements, but they have pumps and piping to constantly drain moisture out. When I worked downtown, during tropical storm Allison in 2001 or so, the tunnel system that connects many of the buildings got flooded, and our parking garage under the Pennzoil building had all 3 floors flooded, including many cars of people who were out of town. It took several days to pump all the water out, and then another week or so to repair some electrical equipment that was in the basement, so the whole building was closed. We were able to set up shop in our client's (Chase Bank) office for a week or so.

Overnight, SE Houston got 20 to 24 inches of rain and some bayous are way out of their banks, exceeding the 500 year flood plain. I am in SW Houston, which is farther away from Galveston bay (where all the water eventually ends up), so not quite as bad so far.

Edit: just took this screen shot of the local TV station on my computer. It looks like the storm will head back out into the Gulf and then head back inland, so that is actually good news for Houston as most of the wind is over, and the rain is always heaviest on the east side of any tropical system (at least in the northern hemisphere), so Louisiana will get hit with more rain:

Houston here, but we're safe in the Galleria area. Not so much south of us in Meyerland though. We hear the helicopters flying over us. Fortunately I took my iLok home on Thursday night and was able to work from home. I tried to go out and check the studio this afternoon, but had to turn around. It's still raining!

Thanks Zed! Looks like we have about 1 more day to deal with the storm in Houston, as far as additional rainfall. They say it could take a month for all of the bayous and rivers to get down to normal levels. Luckily I didn't get any water in the house, and I still have electric power, unlike the last hurricane in 2008 where I was without power for 10 days.

I have only gone outside a couple of times since Friday to pick up some palm tree branches and empty out my "Cajun Rain Gauge" (5-gallon bucket). Around 30 inches of rain has fallen since Friday night, 40 inches east of town.

As they forecast, the storm moved out back into the Gulf of Mexico where it will stay for a day or so before moving inland again over by the Texas-Louisiana border.
