SC48 crashing into Backup mode
Hi guys. I have a SC48 probably 6 years old that's been relatively flawless. Lately it started crashing into backup mode, usually after a cold boot after it's been stored. Once it's recovered from 1 or 2 crashes, it stable. Before I open it up and start reseating everything, I want to get some opinions on potential common causes. Might it be:
1 - ribbon cables & connectors? 2 - failing boot drive? 3 - corrupt show file? (I usually load the same start file from 2 years ago) 3 - [your answer here] I haven't had the board open since it was new & I installed the IO16 in it. If I go digging into it, I think I'll replace the boot drive with an SSD. Thanks for any suggestions. |

Re: SC48 crashing into Backup mode
Your list looks pretty spot on, I would suggest giving support a call though.
#3 would be very easy to check if you just clear console, |

Re: SC48 crashing into Backup mode
From my similar experiences with a Profile system, I would recommend checking and cleaning the RAM first. In my case it didn't help as the motherboard was dying. So that'd be my second guess. Never saw a corrupt show file do this kind of thing.

Re: SC48 crashing into Backup mode
When's the last time you changed the BIOS battery? I found out about this the hard way. Entire service brought down by a $2 battery.

Re: SC48 crashing into Backup mode
Well, the clock hasn't lost time. So the battery is probably ok. But I'll replace it when I dig into it.

Re: SC48 crashing into Backup mode
Are you getting the Windows "blue screen of death" at all? If that happens intermittently but everything is fine once it fully boots, then it's definitely the BIOS battery. Good luck, hope that's all that it is.

Re: SC48 crashing into Backup mode
Just wanted to follow up. After reseating just about everything I could get my hands on short of completely disassembling the DSP board sandwich, I haven't had any further crashes.

Re: SC48 crashing into Backup mode
Hi Greg-
There should have been an error message prior to the recovery prompt message; the one we had was "critical system DSP error". If that sounds familiar the likely solution is to remove the PCI bus extension card cage (HUB 48, and TDM mix engine cards 0 and 1), remove each card and gently clean the fingers with your choice of appropriate chemistry. The TDM jumper between the mix engine cards is one source of DSP errors and unmating and remating it has been sufficient. Put it all back together and boot it up. Common error in reassembly is to mis-plug a CAN bus connector (been there, didn't want the shirt). Venue support can provide you the service manual chapter that walks you through disassembly to get down to the PCI extender. You'll spend more time taking the console apart than fixing the problem. If you've already fixed the crash problem please fill us in! Tim Mc |
