Try to convolve pink noise (with different EQ, pre and post processing) with the extracted noise floor from your audio file as Impulse Response with Soundhack.

The best solution for me was to use Infinity from Antares, which lets you grab a few frames of room tone and create a smooth long stretch, using various algorithms. But the guys there decided to drop the ball and not port it to OS X. Thankfully, a company called Audiofile Engineering is working on something very similar called Loop Editor (not the version they have up on their website right now), but they still haven't given out a release date. Feel free to put some friendly pressure on them ;-)
