The best solution for me was to use Infinity from Antares, which lets you grab a few frames of room tone and create a smooth long stretch, using various algorithms. But the guys there decided to drop the ball and not port it to OS X. Thankfully, a company called Audiofile Engineering is working on something very similar called Loop Editor (not the version they have up on their website right now), but they still haven't given out a release date. Feel free to put some friendly pressure on them ;-)
