So what if the upgrade to 9 was more significant you got a steal eleven months ago for it, so on the native side if you payed 300 to upgrade from 8 to 9 and then pay 300 from 9 to 10 you've payed a total of 600. which is the cost of the full version of pro tools at any store, 600. So to get a "NEW" version of pro tools, all the features aside from 64 bit that everyone has wanted cost you the price of new software, not so bad considering you got an open program for any 3rd party hardware, new plugin format, a road to 64 bit and everything else that comes in it.

So "maximum compatibility" sounds to me like there isn't better hardware or software out there. That makes it worth the price right there.

So go get it..

The app is fantastic but it is also fantastically expensive

Then you can lock that system down for at least 5 years to come.

I did that with my Mix5 system. No problems at all... I have a DAW Computer and THAT is where I make music.
That one stays where I predict that I can leave it. IF - I can update FINE.. I will.. IF I can't... Dont care - I'll lock it down
when it is in a current state of stability.

I used ProtoosMix5 5 or 6 years into the HD era... No problem. Was I unhappy... NO... Not music-wise.. Update-wise, I was bleeding,
but that is because I am stupid and like the sheer fact of updating...

None of that matters because when I bought into Pro Tools, the software was free with the hardware. Who knew 3 years later that same free software would then cost $600, or that $150 upgrades would then cost $300? Also, not everyone cares about 64-bit. I sure as hell don't!

What?! Maximum compatibility meaning maximum reliability with Pro Tools. An RME interface can have a spec sheet that craps all over a 003 and actually shows and proves when performing. But if it crashes all the time or gives me DAE errors or weird driver issues, then the 003 is better for me. Even if pairing that same RME up with Cubase or Reaper may sweep the floor with the 003 and Pro Tools and performs as reliably, I still rather use Pro Tools.

Also, even if not monetarily investing in the future releases of Pro Tools, you are still investing in it with your time and all the years you've spent learning it!

What do you want, the software to be free and use it on anything you want? All this updating is to get to a software we all want. Sure it used to be cheaper but we had to by their hardware. You can't have the best for next to nothing. And don't tell me its not the best, if it wasn't you wouldn't be belly aching so much!

Respectfully...

If you sincerely need features in this field they're worth $300.

No I do not want it for free. But I don't want to pay more than it's valued at. I'll ask you as I asked another member yesterday; would you still be saying this same stuff if they were charging $600 for a native upgrade and $2000 for the HD upgrade? At what point is too much too much?

Then you might as well say they would be worth $1000. Or how about $10,000 while we're at it?!

Yes I would pay that, if there is nothing else out there that does what Pro tools does with the same amount of effectiveness and ease and end product, then how could I put a price tag on it. But I'm also not stupid to think that I need to fall into the trap that just because they updated it or added minor features and call it an update that I have to have it. Why do they charge so much? Because they can and somebody will pay it. If I stay on 9 for say 5 years and saying they release an "updated" version every year and I finally buy Pro tools 14 for the full price of $600, That means I've spent a total of 900 to upgrade from 8. Lets say you or how bout John Doe buys an upgrade every year since version 8 all the way to 14 he has spent $1800. Who's the dumb one. I had a killer version of Pro tools with 8 I was happy had no problems my mixes sounded fantastic so on so forth and now I'm happy cause I have version 14, John aint so happy cause he's spent a [bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep] load more money than me and he spent all his time in this f@*#in community bitchin that he's spending to much, just so he can have the newer better toy than everyone else!
