I think that's exactly what he meant, the desire to quickly chain and move several faders at the same time in a DAW is intuitive, I've found myself several times wanting to have this to do quick adjustments.

I got a used Command|8 for $175 last year. Might be worth it for you too?

The only way I can think of without a controller would be to make separate groups for each set of faders you want to control, then just turn the group on/off as needed.

What about a FaderPort 8?

Trouble with multiple groups is keeping track of what tracks are in each group. Suppose you want to have a track grouped with other tracks but in another spot you want to have that first track grouped with tracks other than all of the tracks in that first group? I know the explanation is a bit wooly but that's the thing with having multiple groups.

I could see something procedural-wise similar to selecting items in a folder that may not be contiguous and having an operation done on all of them. How about this: select the tracks you want, hold down a modifier key like option on a Mac, grab a fader in any selected track and make your moves?

The studio-owner is thinking about a S3+Dock. But I think it will be an Icon Qcon Pro/EX G2.

What exactly is the issue with grouping? Fast, easy, turn on/off as needed ... for me, using a combination of groups, aux buses, and/or VCA's works great.

Because it is costly in terms of time. It's like getting out of the car through the car roof instead of the car door.

Even better! Nothing beats physical faders under your fingers for me.

I once defiantly asked a wiser producer than myself:
"Come on, what's the difference between hardware faders and digital faders?"
He replied:
"Would you rather put your hands on a naked woman or a picture of a naked woman?"

I usually keep 2 or 3 "TEMP" groups in my sessions and I find the "replace" button (in the group dialog) quite useful to quickly replace the tracks included in the group with the selected ones.

Or a better comparison would be steering a car with an actual steering wheel vs using a mouse or trackball.
