Default Unbalanced TS into TRS jack

Is this a bad idea? I don't have a balanced TRS cable, but I really want to use my TubePre as a DI box. Can I just run a TS cable from the preamp into the TRS input on my Mbox? Is this bad practice, considering I'm running a small scale studio in my dorm?

Using a TS>TS cable to connect a balanced output to a balanced input is not a great idea. You can give it a go if you must, it won't damage anything, but watch out for increased hum and noise.

Obviously, it defeats the purpose of using an external preamp to improve the sound if you use an unsuitable cable that then degrades the sound.

Running a regular TS-TS cable into a TRS input connects ring and sleeve together, which usually does nothing more but drops it to unbalanced connection. HOWEVER, some equipment make brumming or humming noise by doing this, so if that happens you need to change the cable.

If you make unbalanced connection, you should know that some manufacturers recommend you leave negative/cold unconnected, some recommend you connect negative/cold to ground pin (which is what you're doing if you plug a TS into a TRS).

Good luck :)
