Don't think so, maybe for GNU/Linux Audacity is the only way to go.

The one and only way I can see Avid going for the GNU license is scrapping all proprietary code away and concentrate to The One And Only. I just can't see that happening...

Avid does not have to "go for the GNU license" to run an application on Linux. However the massive amount of work needed to port and significantly redevelop lots of code for a very small market is not going to be justified. And you would want/need plug in developers to report/support plugins in yet another platform? And which of the many fragmented distros/kernels do you target in this small Linux desktop market? And there are technical and other issues surrounding iLok licensing (including parts of what Pace offer that don't involve an actual iLok). Expect just about anything using anything from Pace to get a very unfriendly reception in Linux land, starting with the standard debugger disabling tricks that Pace uses/relies on to not be supported.
