Default Disappointing List of Plugins

I can't believe how few plugin developers are listed on the AAX lists!

Didn't Avid get some partners before they went down this road? I hate to thnk this but is seems that Avid grossly underestimated their power in the market today. They are no Apple, at least anymore. Very sad to see this as I personally adore their products!

This has got to be a massive pill to swallow for new HD AAX owners!

For hdx it is tough. But for every body else things seem to be moving along. Every month it seems the announcements are a few more than the month before. The developers know they have a better part of a year to have aax plugs ready. Guessing as the year goes we are going to see a big batch of aax out.

Maybe it's an egg and Chicken game w hdx. Not a lot of systems sold so not a large return for R&D for a company but people don't want to buy it till there are more systems to assure a return.

Yup, PI devs are waiting for HDX sales and potential HDX buyers are waiting for plug-ins. I'm sure it will all come together with PT11.

That and there is not much money in the creation of plug ins. Most dev's probably have day jobs which will slow them down when making an aax version.

171* aax plugins (170 native for macs. Talk about shafting the pc guys who only gets 100 aax plugins total of which 30 only are also available as dsp ) are available now to purchase. Of these 66 are dsp aax (mac). I don't remember since it's been a while, but I think the transition to tdm/rtas was even worse. There's a lot more coming from the companies that have announced that they are working on aax plugins but are not out yet, so that 171 plugins will jump quite a few. Now considering Waves had over 191 plugins (mercury bundle) just by themselves, it's no wonder the list seems shorter, but waves did say they will support aax native. Will they port all their plugins we don't know. But add that to the others that are already listed to release their plugins this year, and that's going to be a whole lot. Hopefully alot of the TBA dsp on the pro tools expert blog, will come to bare to bring up that 66 number.

*counted from the list posted by avid.

Bingo! That's it, really.

PT10 is a transitional product which allows use of old and new hardware simultaneously. Early adopters can chime in and someone like me can use old hardware with full TDM plugin support and some of the best of the new PT features. The greatest news about PT10 is that AAX now has an official released platform which plugin vendors can use. Nobody who mixes in the box can use the new system before plugs are ready, but if you're mixing with outboard gear then the new hardware is big step forward. But it's a work in progress for now.

64-bit world will be here soon enough. If you think that PT10 is tough on plugins then you should have no hurry moving to PT11 because that means no more TDM and no more RTAS. AAX is now what TDM was on day one so we just have to be patient.

Right.

From what I understand, the transition from Mix to TDM was much worse. At least there is a choice right now to use TDM, RTAS or AAX all in the same version of Pro Tools.

We also have to consider that AAX is not priority one for most plugin developers. They have other formats to design for, as well as new products to write... hell some companies have only just released RTAS versions within the past year. There is time still before we have to worry about everyone making the switch.

I think what people are missing is this, so I'll put it in block capitals to make sure it is clear.

ONLY AAX PLUGINS WILL WORK IN PRO TOOLS 11, SO IF IT CAME OUT TODAY THERE WOULD BE ZERO THIRD PARTY VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTS YOU COULD USE. NATIVE OR DSP.

Dan is right about this. VST is the bread and butter. While we live in PT land and think we're the centre of the audio universe, I'm sure VST (and AU) far outnumber AAX. While PT plugins may give credibility to plugin makers, their VST ones bring home the bacon.

On a side note, I've been secretly enjoying the transition as the early adopters of AAX-DSP (i.e. Softube and Metric Halo) have given me new tools that I would have never explored while I lived in Waves TDM.
