Default I\'d like to put my virus software on manual load.

I would like to have my machine startup clean and only start McAfee when I use the net on my pt desktop.

Should I do this in msconfig startup or go to the services menu and put it all on manual?
Thanks
Bryan

I kinda do the opposite at the moment. I let the crap load manually and when I use PT, I go into services and turn them off. I have av and a bunch of web dev stuff. There are automated ways to do this (multiple logins comes to mind) but I just haven't done it yet. takes 15 seconds.

I have a separate audio computer behind a router, loaded with Norton AV and Norton Personal Firewall. I turn off both the AV and the Firewall within the Norton interface and run msconfig and uncheck all the Norton/Symantec start-up files to be sure they're "dead". When I want to put the PT computer on the net, I turn them on in the Norton interface and uncheck them in msconfig, reboot, do what I need to do on-line and then reverse the process again. About the only time I do this is when I want to update Windows and Norton, run some scans and do some maintenance. The rest of the time I use my email/net computer to download program and driver updates and then just send them across on my network to the PT computer.

Whatever you do, get Ghost or similar and be religious about backing up to image files, most especially before you install software and/or updates.

Cheers,

Short and simple.

Hardware profiles.

I have one for internet and one for music production.

But nobody seems to understand me on how it turns off services you dont need. So I really dont want to rewrite a essay. You can reserach it online. Its really easy to do. Maybe you familiar with it already. Even better!

bye.

Switching "Hardware Profiles" only disables devices like sound cards, NIC's, etc...and their associated resources. It does not turn off services like anti-virus scanners.
If you know it otherwise, please post it how..

Thanks for the posts everyone,

I was thinking the same about hardware profiles..that they only controlled hardware and not software services. I had a post last week on the subject. If there is a way I didn't catch it on the first pass
(can brains be put in overdub mode ) please briefly repeat ..I'll do the search and see if I missed something.

The reason I was thinking services as opposed to msconfig is that msconfig still leaves McAfee shield running which is the biggest resource hog.

Thanks for the helpful posts and I'll report my outcomes.
Bryan

Doesn't it have an option to load/not load with Windows? Turn it off and reboot?
