desperately seeking a shortcut
let's say I have four tracks comprising a sound effect, or a sequence of effects. Let's say they ALL need to be panned together, either a movement or a simple placement (everything happening far off OS).
Currently I have two different approaches: - one is to select the audio, group the tracks, name it "temp pan" or whatever, do the move or automation editing, then disable the group. - the other is to simply do the move or editing on one track, then copy the automation line and copy copy copy copy down to my tracks. what I'd LIKE to have is a shortcut that temporarily groups my editing so I can just hold a set of keys while doing my move and everything will edit or move together. does my dream shortcut exist? is there another way I'm not considering? THANKS!

Unfortunately it doesn't exist. Best bet is to makes group, do the automation, then delete the group.

Re: desperately seeking a shortcut
Have you tried coming at it from the opposite angle?
You could keep the tracks permanently grouped, and then either use the Control (Mac) or Start (Windows) modifier key to de-clutch an individual pan control / fader etc from the group. Alternatively you could use the modifier combination cmd+shift+g (Mac) or ctrl+shift+g (Windows) to temporally suspend all groups whilst you make any tweaks, then run that combo again to turn the groups back on. The other alternative is to have command focus mode (the little "a...z" icon) active in the groups box, and use that to suspend and activate groups as needs be. |

Re: desperately seeking a shortcut
interesting, but as I try to conserve tracks, the tracks I need to edit together are always changing - these three, then those 6, then just these other 2... would be too many permanent groups to manage!

Re: desperately seeking a shortcut
In what way are you trying to preserve tracks? Are you running out of outputs or just trying to be economical?
Are you able to create some virtual predubs? Output 8 tracks out to a bus and then pan the resulting bus on an aux track. eg FXA1 FXA2 FXA3 … FXA8 >FXA (5.1 aux) <-pan this track Are you in the box? Hope that makes some sense, if you could answer some of the questions maybe there's another way to go about it. C |

Re: desperately seeking a shortcut
makes sense, and I've done that sort of thing for consistent groups of tracks - separate tracks just for engines, just for the vehicles, etc - and then either have groups to turn off and on, or bus as you say.
other than those I'm just trying to be economical with tracks!

Re: desperately seeking a shortcut
Why no "copy Special - pan automation" then move your selection down( paste ; paste ; paste?
Are the tracks of differing widths or something? |

Re: desperately seeking a shortcut
that's what I'm doing, Brent! it works, is fast enough, but is way more clicks than I'd like it to be. in fact I was always satisfied with this operation until CLIP GAIN got me spoiled on the sort of temporary group it creates when you select across tracks. I get used to doing that for balancing levels, and then it doesn't work for automation and I get fussy.
RecRoom, VCA would work with groups of tracks that are homogenous, but not for a lot of my tracks. maybe I just need to get another process card and make all my tracks unique!
