Default Suggestions for vocal mic under $500?

Also, any luck recorded decent vocals straight into 001 without using additional pre amps? Much appreciated.

A Rode NTK would be a good choice for direct into the 001.

I've had really nice results using an Audiotechnia 3035 direcly into my M-box (Same pre-amps as the 001). It lists for $350, but you can pick one up on e-bay for $150. I think it sounds a lot better than other mics I have that are well over the $500 range. It's comparable to the TLM 103. A tiny bit noisier though. 12dB of self noise. Nice flat response all the way across the board. Cardiod pattern perfect for vocals, aocoustic gits, distorted cabs, etc... Also has a 10 dB pad, and a high pass filter switch that rolls off at 12 dB per octave starting at 80 Hz. Also comes with a really nice shock mount. I don't know what it is, but I've put this mic in front of about anything you can think of and it never fails to amaze me. Try it out, you won't be dissapointed.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that they do have the same pre-amps. Proove me wrong.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">You probably read it on a forum like this one, where someone quoted a piece of erroneous information. The preamps in the 001 are definitely not the same as those in the M Box. I don't have time to "prove" you wrong right now, but a quick search of the Digi site should prove it to you. The 001 uses relatively generic preamps. The M Box uses Focusrite preamps...that's pretty easy to confirm, and you won't find anything on Digi's site saying that the 001 uses Focusrite preamps, so that should tell you right there. Digi wasn't even Focusrite's distributor when the 001 came out. The 002 uses a newer Digi design (no pun intended) based on their Pre, which is a different preamp still.

The 001 and M-Box preamps are not the same. That was part of the marketing of the M-box, as while it only has two inputs, they are very nice focusrite preamps

the rode NTK is a killer mic for $400, not only for vocals, but for reeds, acoustic instruments, drum overheads.....I've yet to find something it doesn't sound good on.

Hope this is helpful.

I stand corrected guys. Sorry about the false info. But I would still recommend the AT 3035. Can't beat it for the price.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that they do have the same pre-amps. Proove me wrong. I'd hate to be giving out false information. No sarcasm here, seriously, I'd like to know the truth about this.
