I am actually fairly new to ProTools, have been using Cubase for the last 5 years but added ProTools to the studio for another engineer that will be doing projects in our studio and he uses Pt.... So, Be Kind on my questions

First, My perpetual license includes up to 2018, and my license is paid up to I think June of this year. I've stayed at 12.7 just because that is what my friend had been using. Now that I"m getting to my upgrade end I was wondering is there any videos or comparisons on what the big difference is in the PT 12.7 vs 2018.xx ? My plans are to keep the upgrade program going but I"ve not used the phone - Technical support, I've always asked questions here.

I am using a Dell XPS 8930 I7 8086 processor. 32gb ram, NVME PCIE M.2 1TB OS - Program Drive (C:) 2TB Seagate HDD storage drive and a 1TB Samsung 970 NvME m.2 SSD with a Star Tech x4 PCIE adapter (3300MBs read, 2800MBs write) as my project audio drive. Windows 10 pro

my interface is to an RME Raydat card with Light Pipe to my Sony DMXR 100 digital console.

So Far the projects we have done have been working fine, with the audio set at 64 For our use of less than 32 tracks we have not run in to any real issues.

That brings me to the question is what about upgrading to 2018 .xx? and what changes in features and the interface will I see? Also now what happens if my friend stays with 12.7 and does not upgrade to 2018... can he open the projects we do at my place...

Appreciate any suggestions you might have. Hope this isn't to broad of a question..

When it comes to updates, trials and new software of any type, I have a very simple philosophy(which you should consider). Here it is:
Try every update, BUT(the great big BUT), do these 2 things:
#1-DON'T jump on any update the first week it gets released(pay attention to what others have to say about an update, in case its a disaster.....which happens sometimes)
#-ALWAYS(as in always, really....trust me) have a backup plan.

Mine is simple. I keep 2(or more) similar system drives on hand(I rotate a pair of 500GB Samsung SSD's). One has my working setup and the spare is usually the previous version of PT. When I want to try an updated version, I clone my current C: drive to the backup. Then I swap the 2 drives so the fresh clone goes into the computer, and I install the update. If the update turns out to be a mess, I can swap back to the earlier drive(and re-clone if the update totally hosed something). If the update goes smooth, I will run it for a month or so, and then clone this newest drive over the previous. Drive imaging and drive cloning are 2 ways to protect your ASSets

BTW, having drive cages for easy drive swap can be really handy(if your computer has room)

Wow, I am going to need lots of coffee to get through all of this, and, being so new to ProTools it's a bit overwhelming to say the least. I get very concerned at all the revisions being released, that could be a nightmare just keeping up..... I wish there were a video produced by AVID on the difference in the major upgrades for example 12 to 2018 and the features.... reading release after release is very time consuming!

I always keep backups of all my systems (it's saved me more than once)... and thanks for your explanation on you handle your flow.....

All in all, like I said I"m just overwhelmed with the transistion and now looking at all the releases...then, trying to figure out which one to start with. I talked with AVID, I guess there is no way to load the old and the new on the same system, with Cubase I have Version 9 and 10 both loaded so if I have questions or issues I just open the project in the lower version and go on with my work... .it isn't going to be that easy with PT I guess....

I have some other questions on set up optimization and hardware that I will post in another thread to keep from intermixing my questions... there seems like alot of do's and don'ts in the set up so I want to get a handle on that...

In short, do you know if PT 12 (or 2018 ) is truly a multi threaded opperating system and why the heck would one turn of Hyper Threading in the bios of the newer machines, that seems Archaic to me ...
