Default Anyway to get 8 adat inputs @ 96khz w/ digi 002 R?

Looking into expanding my input range on my digi 002 r with a digital preamplifier. After renting one I've discovered that with the 002s single optical in you can either run 4 ch at 96 or 8 at 48. Is there anyway around this? Or will I be stuck using either 48 kHz sessions or maxing at 12 inputs?

Thanks to anyone with answers,
-Colin.

The 002 doesn't SMUX. You can't get any ADAT above 48K. Period. If you want to use the ADAT input, you must be at 44.1/48.

You may be able to connect your digital pre @96k via SPDIF however.

To my knowledge... an interface does not exist that allows you to put 8 channels down a single ADAT pipe at 96k. This is a limitation of ADAT, not the 002.

Any interface I've ever encountered with ADAT/SMUX gives you 8 channels at 44.1/48 and 4 at 96k through a single pipe. A device must have two lanes to achieve 8 channels at 96k.

Sorry guys,

So If I've understood correctly:

Pairing the Digi 002 R with say an OctoPre, we'd get:

-8 channels at 44.1/48khz (optical)
OR
-4 channels at 96khz (optical)

Right?

Would I still be able to connect the remaining 4 channels using analog?

Thanks in advance.

No. The 002 doesn't SMUX so it will not do anything over 48K via ADAT.

As said, the ONLY way to use optical at 96K is by using it as SPDIF, which is 2 channels only. TO work at 96K with the 002, you can only have a maximum of 10 inputs(8 analog and 2 via SPDIF optical). Having said that, do you really NEED to work at 96K? I can't tell you how many studios in Nashville work at 48K for nearly everything. Consider the source, and the destination. If you are recording classical or bluegrass, then 96K makes sense(but the 002 does not). For pop/rock/country, 48K is fine, and allows you to work 18 inputs with the 002, an 8 channel pre over lightpipe(like the OctoPre) and a 2 channel pre via RCA SPDIF(like a DBX 386 or ART DigitalMPA). Food for thought

BTW, 96K hammers my rig. The last project I did was brought to me from another studio, and was so poorly recorded, I converted to 48K and worked the daylights out of it(and yes, the client was very happy with the result).
