Default Re: Is 2020 better w Catalina?

Sorry to say many users has huge video issues and other problems tied to the video engine so I would either stay on the system that you have working now or wait to use the video engine with 2020.3 as we have given up on video work on PTU for now. All kind of issues

All testing on our new Mac Pro’s 7.1 machines with Catalina and must say our Trashcans with HS one 2 of them and mOjave one 1 we have better performance on the two HS Trashcans so hope Avid and Catalina support catches up.

I know many say Yeah Catalina is working great but I am sceptical those guys are actually using their systems for large commercial sessions with a lot of automation and VI.

One interesting thing is video filed that was on the internal SSD was error ridden but after moving them to an external SSD drive thode same movs worked again ... all in a days ... problem solving ... Avid is a funny entity!

Hope all is well and you got better luck than we did with 2020.3

Althougy for music it is pretty great and feels snappier and more stable. IMHO of course and as we all know some users with the same setup but maybe a different ssd drive or ram and some different plugins can have huge implications for errors ut so far we are pleased and as we are using Track folders all the time on Live and Logic x this was a good release for our needs.

I did warn you that those new mac pros are having problems with clock speeds.. but I was hoping it would be fixed by now..and so far the "high performance " mode in catalina is no where to be seen? (it was basically supposed to allow the chips to remain boosted at their actual all core turbo intel rated clock speeds, like windows high performance mode does).

I wonder if you could ever be bothered just as an experiment, I bet you pro tools and Windows 10 on the 28 core mac pro would perform WAY better than on Catalina.

Anyway, thanks for answering, will still keep away from Catalina for now for sure!

Regarding Windows and Mac I would rather nor mess with that as we never used Windows for recording ever except in the good ol days of Pentium 3 and Steinberg DAW’s (midi only days) so We will just start moving over to the new Macs slowly when time permits. Have got quite a few new songs to finish for Universal US and Milkshake Records so no time to do anything right now.

All The Best and Stay Safe Brother. And stay away from Video on Catalina and 2020.3. No Bueno!

Go Preferences > Display > Enable Tool Tips

Then hover your mouse over the 'Disk Cache' meter of the 'System Usage' window. It will tell you the size (in MB) of active clips on your timeline. Using that info you can make a better estimate of how large you need to set your disk cache.
