The initial aax testing in 10 is showing it really no different from rtas. Hopefully we will see it come alive w pt 11.

Playing devils advocate, what will make the difference in AAX performance between Pro Tools 10 and Pro Tools 11?

Nope it's just native.

Air has stated nothing about aax at this point. They have stated they will stay partnered w avid which means they must release aax in the coming months. All their plugs up to this point have been native, no dsp and no word if that will change or not.

Coding of the program and how it handles the plugins I am guessing.

So not only the addition of larger memory addressing but how the coding of the audio engine that handles the new aax plug-in format? And is that to say that RTAS will not be supported in Pro Tools 11?

Correct on both accounts. There are talks of hoping for some type of a wrapper to allow rtas to work like fxpansion vst to rtas wrapper, but who knows at this point?

I'm testing it right now and it seems to be running pretty well compared to how bad RTAS instruments typically are. Although this is a pretty light synth compared to Omnisphere and Kontakt. Those are the ones I'm really waiting to see in AAX format.

I think we are going to see as many AAX DSP instruments as we saw TDM instruments.

My understanding (when they were still at Avoid) was that the AIR team were working on AAX versions. I have no reason to think that has changed, but then again I don't know what priorities inMusic will have.

Right. It's still impractical to host VIs on DSP chips. If anything, it would have to include some sort of physical storage to host the libraries.

Have seen some threads of testing identical plugs in both formats. That's the only way to really do it. If interested you would have to try both rtas and aax of this same plug in and compare. Things like kontakt have been a mess in rtas since day 1 and omni sphere is a resource hog in general, though that is probably part of its magic.
