Default FIRST TIME USER! HELP!

Hi! I want to get a Digi001 PTle system, my first venture into computer recording, but my computer is a Pentium 3 1Gig running Windows98se. Will this be o.k? (256MB. which I will double if it's going to be feasible for this computer). Thanks in advance for any tips/advice you may have.

Check the Digidesign Compatibility documents to make sure that your system is up to spec. A PIII 1GHz machine is okay, but you must be sure you have a compatible chipset and other system components.

Here is a link to the compatibility specs you'll need to look at:

Compatibility Document for Digi 001 on Win98se or WinME

256MB will be enough RAM running Win98se. You might want more if you upgrade to WinXP. If you want 32 tracks and Quicktime Video support you'll need to run WinXP and PTLE 5.3.1. With Win98se you can't run PTLE 5.3.1. You'll be limited to PTLE 5.1.1 which doesn't have Quicktime Video support and is limited to 24 tracks.

If 24 tracks is enough and you don't need video support then PTLE 5.1.1 is quite good. You'll be fine with Win98se if that's the case.

Looks good actually! Getting excited now! Reckon I'll be able to record all 18 inputs at the same time? What I want it for really is as a replacement tape machine, where I can record live bands and then tidy up the waveforms etc (I have Wavelab 4 also, I may be able to do more to them with this if they're compatible?) then play all the good stuff back through my board for now, until I get to grips with internal mixing.

Protools is setup as a normal console. So if you are used to tracking with a tapedeck and a mixer, you shouldnt have difficulties mixing on the digi001.

Bear in mind that the digi001 can take 18 inputs, but:
8 analog
8 adat-lightpipe
2 spdif

So if you want to track 18 channels, you will need additional gear. If you have an adat, you could use that for the lightpipe...

Protools is a great program to edit, very simple to do...

protools can output standard audiofiles you can read in wavelab.

Thanks Bastiaan, so PTle will output wav files that I can edit in Wavelab and use my Waves plugins (compressors, limiters, etc), then return them into PTle for mixing? Great! Thanks again.

You can use Waves as RTAS and Audiosuite plugins in Pro Tools.
Maybe up-grade first, i am not sure if that is possible. Check www.waves.com

Not to worry. I am running a Pentium 3 256 ram and it rocks. As long as your computer is an Entel based P.C. you will be fine. The only thing is a new upgrade shipped recently ( 5.3.1 )and you will need to upgrade your operating system to windows XP to run this newest upgrade. Good luck !
