HD Native latency
I'm still on a HD3 Accel system and planning to upgrade.
I'm considering HD Native but I'm worried about latency during recording. I've seen figures (all referred to 96KHz / 64 sample buffer, while I'm most of the time on 48 KHz / 128) basically saying the HD Native's latency would be double compared to my Accel system. Is this correct ? If so, could it be a possible solution to use a "near-zero" latency interface like the Apollo for example ? Thank you

Re: HD Native latency
Hey there,
I went from an HD4 to an HDN. I had mostly moved away from tracking, but have done quite a bit with the new system. I read through all of the numbers at different sampling rates, etc, and was worried.... After playing with buffer settings, not putting certain plugins on submixes, playing with turning delay compensation on and off, etc., I found that we get un-noticeable latency recording up to 8-10 simultaneous tracks just by keeping the plugins off the submaster... or disabling them upon record. I've never really done more than 10-12 tracks simultaneously on this machine, and would be a little hesitant to try 20, but it really works great and has a lot more useable horsepower than the tdm system. No regrets.

Re: HD Native latency
HD Accel latency = 2.4ms
Your particular tolerance for latency will be an entirely personal affair. at 44.1 with HDN and AVID i/o you get: 32 samples 3.35ms 64 samples 4.80ms 128 7.68ms 256 13.52ms LLM 1.9ms LLM is the Low latency monitor path (no plugins allowed) at 44.1. This is pretty much the A/D D/A conversion time. At 96kHz the A/D and D/A conversion times are less... so you get 64 samples 1.70ms 128 3.12ms 256 5.8ms 512 11.12ms LLM 0.47ms Simplest zero latency monitoring is with splitting signals after mic pres (or compressors if you have em) and doing it analog with a little verb added in for vibe. Sure - Apollo works too but that is a different workflow.

Re: HD Native latency
I find this latency discussion not so constructive, because it really is low enough. Take a look at any session you have and zoom in to your bass track for example. I can assure you that every single note is 1-2ms off and you don't hear it until you zoom in and see it.
KNOWING what the latency is means nothing. FEELING that something is wrong means you need to fix it. HDN is just as good as TDM ever was.
