Default How do you connect an external Compressor to digidesign 002 rack?

I've been recording my band and I want to connect an external DBX compressor to my digidesign 002 rack. I want to be able to use it with any channel instead of having to plug into the compressor and then plug into my adat converter which is connected to my digi 002 rack.

Does anyone have any ideas? Does my question make sense?

Thank You

Derek Bess

Channel Inserts - mentioned in the manual - have no copy with me - can be done - just be glad I didn't say RTFM - that could seem uncool.

I'm going to try it. I'm just a little concerned because i'm using an 8 channel ADAT Converter and I'm sure how it can be done. I have the manual too but it was no help =/

Just be forewarned, you will have to compensate for latency incurred by the extra set of conversions, plus the buffer setting. A handy trick is, record the signal BOTH direct, and thru the compressor,(make 2 audio tracks with the same input), then use the direct track to align the compressed track(Tab to Transient is perfect for this). Once you have the compressed track aligned, you can delete the direct entirely if you like(I would disable and hide, just in case). There may be other things to consider here, but once you make it happen, you will see what needs to be dealt with. BTW, if you are going thru all this for a cheapo compressor, my 2 cents says its a waste of time(plugins will sound as good or better with less hassle). Of course, if you are talking about a nice LA-2A or 1176, I would do it myself.

You didn't say (or I couldn't figure) if your are trying to use it during tracking or mixdown.. The setup (and possible benefits) are different depending..

Just go out from ex. out 3-4 if stereo, to in 1-2 on the compressor, than back from 1-2 to in 3-4. You can of course insert it likewise on channels 13-14 too. On the Aux, if you will compress drum group, select Insert I/O 3-4/13-14. You have to configure I/O setup if you can´t. You can do that both when recording & mixing. Latency is of course a problem you don´t have on HD.
