Default Last thing I need is the Microphone

Hello,

First of all, I found this forum is very helpful, so I decided to post another topic.
Microphone is my last thing I need for my system, and I would be done with it for a long time unless something breaks. I have no clue what type of mic is good (this is my first time ever buy a mic..) Also, reading specification on it is not better than asking for help from someone with experience...Anyway, I'm looking for a good (very good if possible) in terms of shape and quality for decent price like less than $150. Please advise... Thank you very much.

Please advise US... What do you need the microphone for? Tracking music? Drums, piano, guitar amps, acoustic instruments, vocals? Do you need it for post-production? Recording ADR and/or VO? Help us help you so I don't just suggest and Audix i5 for the wrong reason (great on snare drum and guitar cabs, I prefer it over the sm57 in a heartbeat)

BTW... good luck not buying anything else for a long time... If I stuck to that plan, 10 years ago, I'd be living like a rockstar.

Sorry, I need it for main vocal. I's not used for Recording ADR and/or VO, maybe for post production but mostly for fun. Thanks

Sadly, you won't buy "good or very good" for $150. If that's really all you can swing, get a Shure SM-57 and a popper stopper(but this IMHO is not "good", only acceptable). Now you CAN get good to very good for under $300 and here are 2 mics I would recommend; MXL V69 Mogami edition and the MXL V6. The V6 runs on phantom power and the V69 is a tube mic that includes a power supply(and the V69 wins out over a $1500 Nuemann I have on most female singers). Since this is really all about opinion, I expect others will have some other options for you to consider so try to audition as many as you can.

IMHO - you might want to try out a few mics before you buy.

In my limited collection, I've got Shure SM 57, 58 & 94, PG81 and KSM 27 (which, of course, is out of the budget you listed).
I've tried using these mics for different moods and each has its own aural color.

If possible, ask your local music store if you can record your voice using their mics - just a few seconds with each mic will give you a good idea on what sounds good to you.

Then go from there.

What do you guys think about MARSHALL MXL-2003? It costs $169 free shipping including the shockmount. Thanks

I haven't used it but I try to buy mics based on how they sound and not on what they cost. If you can try one, give it a listen. I do own a pair of the original MXL(formerly called Marshall) 2001 mics and they are okay for some things but I have several that sound better on voice, including the V69, Neumann TLM49, Shure SM-7 and Sennheiser MD441. If you are just trying to get started and are looking at this as a hobby and learning experience, an SM-57 will always be a welcome addition to any mic collection. I just would not expect to achieve a commercial release quality out of it(although it HAS been done, it takes a skilled engineer). Each of us may have a different idea about what constitutes a good mic vs. an okay mic vs. a great mic so please take my opinion as just that. You could also google "review of ________" with the mic choice in the blank and see what others have to say about almost any mic you might be considering.

The first mic I bought was a SM58. That was in 1982. That mic still screams. Dropped it several times, spilled beer on it several times and it still works great. The only thing I replaced was the wind grill. That's what I would start off with. I now have a Byerdynamic MC 834 N, Sure KSM27 and a couple Audio tech's. The mic I always go back too? That's right. The SM58. Guitar center is selling them for $99.00. Sounds good.
Hope all is well.

John

I think albee was right on with his first suggestion. SM 57, popper stopper, and something tells me he might not have a mic stand either. You can get all 3 for $150.

You will not out grow the 57, I use one on something almost every day. As you get better at recording then spend the money on a mic more dedicated to just vocals.

Perhaps the most important part in the recording process and the signal chain is the transducer. Good recordings start with good transducers. Spend the extra cash. There are many affordable and good mics in the $200-400 range.
