Default $179 DiamondMax 40G choice ProToolsLE?

CLICK FOR VIEW Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40.9GB Internal Hard Drive — ST0154000U

Specs:40.9GB capacity; 7200 rpm for ultrafast read/write capabilities; UDMA 66 controller; 66MB/sec. data transfer rate; 9 ms data discovery seek time!

This is a great deal at BestBuy.com for $179.00.

Dear everyone listening,

Searched through archives here at the DUC to find a second drive for audio. I've seen a lot of Maxtor mentioned. I found one (yeah!) but it doesn't say that it's Mac compatible, and since I'm not sure if it matters, I must ask for help.

Anyone know of this model, and will this Maxtor drive work super well in a new Mac G4 Dual Processor?

thoughts & suggestions welcomed

That drive will work fine for Mac even though it may not say so specifically. You just need to format it with your "Drive Setup" utility that comes with your Mac. I have a 15 gig Diamondmax Plus in my B&W G-3.

Hey thanks for the heads up 1MB! Appreciate having your input.

Perhaps the G3 is only compatible and not the G4. After a bit more thorough research I've started to doubt that the Maxtor Diamondmax plus will work. The reason is since Apple manual indicates only support for ATA, Ultra ATA, Ultra-66 ATA, and Wide Ultra SCSI, no UDMA. Because it does not mention UDMA at all, I think my G4 is probably not going to support the drive. But I don't know about these things, I'm trying to learn so I can build my setup correctly.

Somebody??? If you have a G4 500MHZ Dual Processor please let me know what drive I should get.

I have a G4 500 DP and got the 30G Seagate Barracuda from Onvia at: http://www.onvia.com/usa/products/in...atalog=2530950 seems to work just fine.

my freind, you are the man!

I will now be either getting that very same HD from Onvia.com or maybe this CLICK Western Digital 20.5GB from BestBuy.com

Reason I'm considering the WestD is for it's incredibly fast seek time of 2.2ms vs. Barracuda 8.2! Dunno either if it's a reliable drive like the Barracuda, but the seek time seems favorable enough. As I've been reading on ATA drives, I would assume that the with a faster seek time that screen redraws and recording starts are going to improve. This may just be my misunderstanding of the issue, however, and in that case I'd do better with the Barracuda and gain 10G of storage capacity.

Either 10G or -6ms seek time. Thoughts,or other considerations?

That stated 2.2ms seek time on the WD doesn’t seem right, I didn’t think that even existed with UltraWide SCSI.From what I was able to conclude, drive speed after a certain point becomes redundant with the 001. I think I remember a Digi tech stating that one really wouldn’t notice much difference between ATA and a faster SCSI. Screen redraws and such have more to do with processor speed and available memory than drive seek time.

I've got 3 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus drives in my G4 - a 15G for the system, a 27G for audio and a 40G for audio (in the Zip drive bay). All work great. I just completed a live recording of 120 minutes in length, recording on 16 tracks to the 40G drive with NO problems - not a single error all night!

I paid $279 for mine at Best Buy a few months ago...

Good luck,

Jeff D.
