Default Not enough Delay Compensation?

I have a 24/48 mix going. Using several UAD plugins and a few Waves LinMB. I have a vocal buss channel with 8343 samples of delay and it's showing in red. Why is Pro Tools 12 unable to compensate this channel? Some of the tracks I have going to this buss have a peak delay of 8158 samples. So I'm assuming this is happening because there is a combined delay of 16501 samples between the tracks and the buss? There is no feedback from the software indicating what the restriction is. Can anyone confirm?

Actually found it buried in the manual. 16383 samples is the max. Guess I'll whip out the old Time Adjuster.

DJ, the maximum delay compensation is dependent on the sample rate of the session. If in 48khz you find that you do not have enough delay comp, try going for 88.2/96khz which will give you 32 767 delay comp.

Page 971 of th pro tools 12.1 reference book

I've also found this in the reference guide of pt 11 and pt 12.

Quote:
Delay that Exceeds the Compensation Limit When the total delay on a track exceeds the total available amount of available Delay Compensation (selected in the Playback Engine dialog), no Delay Compensation is applied on that track. Any audio on that track will no longer be properly time-aligned and will be out of phase. Both the Delay indicator and Track Compensation indicator turn red to show that the track delay exceeds the Delay Compensation limit. The maximum available Delay Compensation is applied to all other tracks. However, you can manually compensate for delay on tracks that exceed the Delay Compensation limit.

Thanks! Wouldn't be able to go higher in sample rate as my UAD DSP would max out. I moved a few things around and got it back in the green. Thanks!

wouldnt doubling the sample rate cut the delay comp limit in half, not double it?

Do all DAWs have this limit on delay compensation? I could swear Reaper has no limit?

Only protools has this limit. Nuendo, Cubase, Logic, have no limit, many DAWs therefore don't even expose compensation to the user at all! You just don't have to deal with it.

This is a big mystery why Avid keeps this limit... PDC is just simple math, what computers do best. There is no reason why there has to be a limit... unless there is some archaic technical reason avid doesn't fix this in their code... either way, a clear pain in the ass.

I'm sure knowing avid there is some financial benefit to leave the limit there ;-) ...I hear another upsell coming!

That archaic technical reason is called DSP, and Avid simply has chosen to keep same limit with Native systems.
