Default Sessions Very Slow to Load

Ok..

I haven't changed a thing on my system, nothing.

Suddenly my PT sessions are taking 5-15 min to load. Old ones, new ones..doesn't matter.

PT fires, lags a bit in getting started but gets started. It's just a little slower than before.

When I open a session, it hangs either on "Building Edit Window" or "Building Transport Window".

Activity monitor shows PT in and out of "Not Responding" and using 33-40% of CPU, 48-50 threads and 465MB of Real Mem, 225MB of virtual mem. My system drive is a 250G with 100G of free space.

This rig has always run great. Upgrades from 7 to 8 to 8.03 have been no problem.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm stuck. Waiting 15 min for a session to load is no good. Thanks in advance.

Whoa... just noticed this part. 10GB free on a 250GB drive? Especially your system drive... this is a big no no. Free up some space, and you'll probably notice a difference in performance for everything on your computer. And I don't just mean a few gigs either. Ideally, you want to have at least 20-25% free at all times. So this means 40-50GB free space.

If you are storing your session folders on your system drive, this can also cause issues. Are you using an external drive for your sessions? Is it FireWire? You could also use a secondary internal drive, since you are using a Mac Pro.

If I am not mistaken, 10.6.1 was never qualified for use with Pro Tools either.

Whoops...that was a typo. Have 100GB free on a 250GB system drive. Sorry. Edited that.

Sessions are all on internal secondary drives. I have two 750's.

10.6.1 is indeed qualified. At least I thought.

And I've done all the troubleshooting in that thread.

OK...

I think I got it. We shall see.

1. Went on to all my drives and deleted the Digidesign Database Folders.

2. Repaired permissions on all drives.

3. Installed the 10.6.3 combo updater. I know 10.6.3 is not listed yet, but thought I'd try this before I did a whole wipe/reinstall.

Whammo. PT launches fast. Plugs load quick (they always did). Sessions load faster than ever before.

I guess I got it. Not sure which of the three things was the key. I didn't have time to test each one. Project deadline.

Thanks for the two cool emails.
