Cool Singers and volume control

Heres the thing...

I record alot of singers and i always have trouble with controling their volume... when they go to hit a higher note it sounds kind of muffled and starts sounding like the person is yelling... Im not sure if i should try adjusting my preamp or protools....

My chain goes - AT4040 mic -> Summit audio B221 pre amp -> Protools Mbox2 pro.... and the plugins I have are Waves Musicians 2

any suggestions

Going from the XLR output of the Summit audio to the XLR input on the Mbox 2 pro

you should be going from the summit audio XLR>Balanced input 3 or 4.
you are going through the good (summit) pre and the digi also (booo).
GET A MOGAMI XLR > BALANCED 1/4 and you will be much happier

try this
set up an mono aux track
pick your mic input and on that aux track put your compressor
now bus that aux (pick a mono bus out then on the audio track make that bus the input)track to a audio track this way you can use your internal compressor to control your input signal this will work best with a very low buffer like 128 or 64 that should help i hope.

Paulreed is correct. What you are doing is preamping twice here. The Summit should be plugged into a LINE input.
