Cool PT 8 and MIDI

Is anyone else having timing problems with external midi devices using pro tools 8. I connected an SR16 drum machine to my 002 interface, set everything up so that the SR16 was controlled by the Midi beat clock of PT. But eveything sounded 'out'. So I created a CLICK track and set the SR16 to also sound the click (as well as the pt inst/click sound.) Guess what ...yes they were out, BUT it was not constant, there was drifting on every bar. This is totally unacceptable!
Come on DIGI my old Atari could do solid midi in the 80's, whats going on??

I obtained a USB-midi interface,( m audio 2 channel device ) and doing EXACTLY the same test as above the audio and midi tracks were spot on, on playback. During recording there is a terrible lag (latency) between the click track and the drum machine (drums late!). In fact playing a 'live' drum pattern on the machine (or keyboard) against a click track is nigh on impossible! If this is not a midi problem (I still say the 002 midi out is flakey) is the latency due to listening to the SR16 through a pro tool channel?
It really should not be this hard!

Have you set correctly your playback engine buffer size to 128 samples (maximum)...... You should not have latency playing keyboard.

i had the same problem and fixed it by going into the tempo tab and ajust the tempo resolution to 1 bar or 1/4
for some reason the tempo won't lock if it's above that

Thanks I have realised this was part of the problem. also keyboard to instrument (soft synth) now works fine thanks to one of your other threads reminding me that the buffer setting is NOT the same as LOW Latency monitering....DUH!
