Hi gang....i am currently using a g5 2.0 with 2 megs of ram..osx 10.5.8..i want to get a new computer but am uncertain whihc one would most likely fit the bill....its between either a macbook pro 17" i7 or a imac 27" i7 quad. the question i pose to you all is this...of the 2 which one would give me better performace..i do alot of midi and use alot of VI's and effects...i would like something a bit more portable then what i currently have...and i also want something i can reapir or update if needed be.....any suggestions?..any port issues...currently using pt 8...i am unsure if the macbook pro is as powerful as the imac...and i dont want another mac pro...help if u can cons and pros of both...ty

The Imac I7 quad is most definitely more powerful than the Macbook Pro. It's not as portable, but it's more portable than a Mac pro. If you decide to take it somewhere, your best bet is to use the box it comes in because the box usually has a handle on it.

If you want to move an iMac a lot, then a nice Pelican case would be a great thing to have

I'd take the MBPro, not because of it's size difference, but because it's got an expansion slot! Depending on the interface you're going to use, you can put another FW port via that slot and keep your interface and hard-drive on separate FW busses. It will solve ALL FW traffic issues.

You don not have such an option on an iMac.

That's a good point. But remember that OWC is modding iMacs with a second internal drive and eSATA port

Also it looks like apple is about to update the MacBook Pros. Going with the new "sandy bridge" i7's. An interesting side note I've picked up on due to the error with the chipset that Intel is using with them, is that up to 6 sata ports are available. Maybe, just maybe, the new MacBook Pro's will have combo eSata/USB ports. Mostly hoping but that would be awesome if they did.
