Using Digi 003 and Kemper Profiling Amp

Hi guys, I'm trying to use my new Kemper to record directly in through SPDIF and when doing so I get pops and clicks. Any suggestions on how to permanently set the 003 as the slave and the Kemper as the master?

A few notes:
- I am running both at the same sample rate, 44.1k
- I am using real SPDIF connections (not just RCA cables)
- the outputs are set correctly on the Kemper

The errors I get:
- When setting the 003 to have the clock for SPDIF, it won't output audio, so I have to revert back to "Internal" in the control panel through the audio driver manager

Is there a way to permanently set the Digi as the slave or to have the clock read from SPDIF? Am I missing something?

Which version of the 003 driver are you using?

When you say "the output is set correctly" on the Kemper, what exactly do you mean?

The Word Clock setting is entirely seperate from the output setting, unless I've misunderstood you, in which case, my apologies.

In this case you must set the 003 to clock from S/PDIF. I am having trouble understanding why this is hard to do. You just select S/PDIF as the clock source in the 003 Hardware Setup dialogue screen. You *have* to do that, so now debug why you "get no audio" when you do that.

What does "won't output audio" mean exactly? Won't Playback prerecorded audio already in the session? Track Meters move? You just don't hear anything? The track recording the Kempler no longer gets a signal? What exactly? What clock rate is the session at? (Needs to be 48kHz).

Post screen shots if needed to explain what exactly you are doing.

Thanks for the willingness to help, Darryl. This is what is happening most of the time:
- Without launching PT12, I set the clock on the 003 driver to SPDIF as you suggested.
- I launch PT12
- I start a new session with 44.1 rate and hit OK
- Then I receive the error, "The external clock choice is invalid. Reverting to internal."
- Then, I hit OK on that error box and it starts the session
- I can record audio this way, but...
- While the audio input is just fine, the SPDIF input has artifacts (clicks and noise). This leads me to believe it's driven by the difference in SPDIF clocks - both the Kemper and the 003 trying to be the master?

Ah yes you are right I was thinking 48 kHz for a different box. The Kemper only outputs 44.1 kHz.

This is all pretty straightforward to troubleshoot. The problem is either the Kemper, the cable or the 003. Or basic setup stuff, but if you have a 44.1 kHz session and select the S/PDIF as clock input in hardware setup then you have the right config. But double check the session sample rate because if that is set wrong you could see exactly what you are seeing. Very very rarely you might find things like ground loop or power supply issues cause S/PDIF problems, but extremely unlikely.

Are you using a proper 75 ohm digital RCA (not audio RCA) cable? Try swapping that for another known working digital RCA cable.

Try another 44.1 kHz S/PDIF source into the 003 instead of the Kemper. A CD player or MP3 player... if that does not work then you know the problem is the 003. If it works then maybe the Kemper is sick.

Hi Darryl - thanks again for the reply. Yes, I am using a set of 3ft long LiveWire SPDIF cables that are pretty much brand new. I've tested it with a third cable and the same annoying click/noise is present.

The setup for SPDIF works with the 11r, but I'm not sure what the settings that are making it work are (I'm running the 11r at 48kHz).

Interestingly enough... I had this exact problem with my POD HD Desktop and that's why I ended up selling it.
