Default Control key and vertical movement

I've been having issues for quite some time..

supposedly holding the control key will restrict clips moving left and right. - allowing vertical movement only..

This isnt always true - and sometimes its true for a little bit..

I am reorganising sessions supplied on OMF ( its my job! ) and often when holdin the cntrl key the clips will slip in time as well as moving tracks.. sometimes the control key will constrain horizontal movement for a few tracks and then even tho I havent let go they wil suddenly be free to slide around the time line...

anyone else experience this?

That might be a matter of the order of selecting a clip and when to press Ctrl.
Select clip , press Ctrl , drag (correct)
Press Ctrl , select clip , drag (wrong).

Maybe you could do this, for the initial placing of the OMF files to their correct tracks in your template : select all clips on all tracks - Time Lock (Menu : Clip - Time Lock/Unlock).

When I begin to learn using PT (back to PT3.2 and PT4.0), that's what people explained to me BUT this is WRONG (or it WAS RIGHT at this time, but the behavior has changed a bit since you can unlink Edit & Playhead selection).

Hold ctrl + clic on a clip (with the grab tool) send the clip (start point boundary) to the Edit selection.
(there is other shortcuts :
- ctrl+shift+clic key combos, to send clip (sync point) to the Edit selection.
- ctrl+cmd+clic key combos, to send clip (end point boundary) to the Edit selection.)

Most of time, people have linked the Playhead and Edit Selection, and their selection is at the same time position as the clip they want to move vertically BEFORE ctrl+clicking, so it works as "constrain vertical movement".

If you unlink Edit and Play selection OR if you don't select your clip with the grabber tool BEFORE ctrl+clicking, you won't have the "constrain vertical move" behavior.

thats interesting! the link edit and playhead - have to try get my head around it

I notice that with the option modifier is sometimes like that too- I wonder if I am a bit quick on the wacom sometimes.. ie the modifier press - then the 'mouse' click too soon?

actually the first thing I noticed on firing up my mac mini ( after retiring the mac pro ) was Protools seemed just a little bit 'laggy'

This is a good sum up. Whatever if edit and playhead are linked or unlinked, the correct way to do is to select first, then ctrl+clic (both with the grabber tool)

Like I said, it is not wrong, just a different (unknown) behavior, but the main idea is correct

(Remark : but please do NOT report this as a bug, it is like this for a long time
-> PT6 ? PT7 ?, at least since we can link/unlink Edit and Playhead)

You are right, I should have written "wrong concerning the intention of the OP".

The unintentional pressing of Ctrl prior selecting a clip can really easily be avoided by time-locking the clips, because no modifier is needed to constrain the movement to vertical.

aha! OK I finally see the light!

good call.. import OMF to template.. lock all clips - drag into correct tracks.. unlock all- edit to hell.
