Default Imac and ext HD

hey guys, i´m moving from pc to mac this month ( yeah! you gonna get a lot of questions from me ) and I wanted to know if a USB ext. drive is a good choice for the dedicated audio drive for protools, or is it not fast enough? is it better to get a firewire drive?

I thought getting a usb would leave the firewire bandwidth open for my audio interface...

anyway, thanks for your help!

It's still better to get a firewire drive. You can daisy chain off the one port.

I've run both. Used to daisy chain firewire drive and interface off of one port. Now I run my main audio drive USB 2.0 and Pro Tools is working more efficiently for me.

Hmmm. I was kind of wondering the same thing.
Just bought an imac, and pt10 w/ mbox pro (thanks nst7 for your input), which is a firewire drive.
I guess I could use a drive that has both options and try them both.

Love to hear more input/ experiences.

FireWire is qualified for macs and USB for Vista and Win 7.

I wouldn't got for USB IMHO, despite it working for others Avid have their reasons, which to my knowledge is the way in which USB transfers data.

If you want a smooth and qualified system go FireWire.

eSATA is an option if you don't want USB or firewire. It's much faster than both as well.

Why then do they make the Eleven Rack USB?

USB works different for interfaces than for hard drives.

funny that so far there are not many devices using this port, thou it seems to be great new tech!
hope soon there will be more variety, and a little price drop...
