Default aux input used for talkback

I currently use aux inputs for talkback, so that communication is available during playback, etc. Seemingly out of the blue, these aux inputs have been showing level but not outputing sound only once they have been muted and then unmuted. I have started using low latency monitoring more and more, and that's the only clue I have as to why these inputs aren't audible. If that is the cause, then what are you all doing to work around this?

Thanks
