Stay away from the Antares plug-in stuff. Unless you want the weird effect.

Hire singers or get your talent to multi-track. If you're blessed with a singer that can double close to perfectly, you're ahead of the game.

Otherwise, VocAlign can help, but isn't always the answer. A little trim here and there, or manual time-shifting is sometimes all that is needed

But it really does comes down to having good singers.

If you are paying a sound engineer $100/hr and the studio $250/hr
I wish those kind of rates existed on this planet

I find it takes a lot of time to get excellent performances of vocal doubles and backup parts which need to be so tight or else it sounds like a mess, which takes a long time. It is great we have a lot of tools to help out these days and in the end it often takes a bit of everything to get the sound you're looking for. . . so I don't see any one clear answer to the question. Speaking of tools for creating vocal parts, what are people liking these days?

Depends on who's singing. People like Dorian Holley, Romeo Johnson, Judith Hill, Tiffany Palmer, Robbie Wyckoff, Carlos Ricketts, David Sparkman, Amy Ward, Shaune Ann Feuz, Katie Marino, etc have no problem doing vocal doubles and vocal harmonies and getting them perfectly in sync with the lead on the first take. Its the reason why they get hired as session singers a lot.
