Default How many Softsynths?

Im using imac dual2.6 with PT 8. I keep getting CPU messages. How many softsynths should I expect to use without this message? I can only get approx 4 without the message. I tested with only the RTAS PT plugings.
Thanks

Check out and start messing with your system usage because I can use many instances of Boom and Xpand with barely ANY CPU being "used". I'm on an Intel iMac 2.4 GHz.

You mean your CPU meter? This is not saying much.

I have a MacPro and my CPU might read 5-10% BUT I get HEAPS of CPU/HW Buffer messages...

Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?

It depends which ones you are using, it varies widely from VI to VI, some are efficient, others like Omnisphere (which I love) use massive amounts of CPU resources. As said make sure:
1. You've read and applied all the brilliant set-up guides in the DUC.
2. Make sure all your plug-ins are up to date.
