Well blow me down it appears the balance issue was a bad lead. Still doesn't explain why someone else had the same issue, but maybe they've got a bad lead too Anyway, thanks for all your suggestions!

The problem with bad systems is that they aren't consistent at all. That's why mastering engineers use really flat, full range monitors.

I'm listening here. I like it. It sounds to me that the bass need more definition and possibly level and I seem to hear a bit of conflict in the low-mid frequency area, especially between guitars, bass and backing vocals. These two things play in my opinion the most important roll in translation. This of course is what I think, you can perfectly want your mix to have a completely different direction and sound.
