Plextor CD-RW 12/10/32
I just bought the Plextor CD-RW EIDE and realized that the MAC G4/400 2nd bay is only for Zip drive. I could take out the DVD drive; however, I wouldn't be able to burn CD-CD. Any suggestions?

Re: Plextor CD-RW 12/10/32
1. You can make an image of your source CD and burn this
or 2. try to connect your DVD ROM on a second E-IDE cable.... take a look at slave and master. Your HD is on first IDE cable (Master), Burner and DVD on second IDE cable (Master and slave). Take a look at your motherboard...i had no problems doing this on my PC (bad comparision, i know). DigiG4 |

Re: Plextor CD-RW 12/10/32
Digi4 I thought about doing that but, I really don't want to give up my DVD ROM unless I've to. Is it possible to get an external bay for The IDE CD-RW. I'm concerned with powering the CD-RW and cooling it. Maybe I'm stretching this too far, but I'm really don't know what to do at this point. I tried exchanging the drive for the SCSI edition however, it's not available at 12/10/32. My other option is to put the drive in a PC that I have and install PTle and use that system just for mastering and burning. Is there anyone currently using PTle on both platforms and is it even worth doing? I would assume there will be some limitation on the PC.
Anymore suggestion I would greatly appreciate. RnR |

I think removing your DVD drive is not a good idea since you can boot from it (with a system CD) If your HD fails...
You could ask your local dealer if is posible to make a SCSI box useful to fit your IDE CDRW and plug it in with a long IDE cable from the Mac motherboard... Ok, forgive it... It's not a good idea... |

Re: Plextor CD-RW 12/10/32
You might be able to hook it up as firewire. Go to www.outpost.com and search for "pyro". then look for Pyro 1394 drive kit. It's a housing for a CD-RW or hard drive with a firewire connection.
I'm only mentioning this as something to check into. I doubt it's supported by digi but it might work out for you. I remember some earlier posts about successfully recording audio using this drive enclosure with a second ATA drive, which, by the way, is not supported either. So I'm thinking maybe it could work for the CD-RW also. Did I mention that I hadn't actually done this myself, but if you don't find another solution it might be worth exploring? Also, a search for "Pyro" on this forum might turn up something. Good Luck Bob [This message has been edited by onemanband (edited November 08, 2000).] |

Re: Plextor CD-RW 12/10/32
Bob thanks alot I think I'm going to try your suggestion. I remember a couple of threads on firewire burners and alot of users seems to have good results. I went to the URL and the price is not bad either, given I would spend probably more if I should purchase a SCSI drive & card.
However, before I do is there anyone with this similar setup(an IDE CDRW in a Firewire housing) and what's your opinion? Many thanks guys. RnR |

Re: Plextor CD-RW 12/10/32
I'm using a yamaha IDE burner in a Pyro Firewire case and it works great. No problems.
I had it in the G4, but it wouldn't boot a system CD, so the DVD Ram drive went back in and the burner went into the Pyro case. Many CD's later, I'm still happy. |
