Default 003 - lost communication with audio interface -PT LE 8.1

I'm running PT LE 8.1 on a 2.8 8core mac pro with 10gig of Ram.

All my plugins are supported / don't cause crashes.

I've just added nebula which for some reason creates CPU spikes when it saves. If I use more than 7 instances the spikes are enough to stop playback.

That in itself is not a problem... If Pro Tools was giving me the old "Inrease W/W buffer" pop up I could handle it.

Instead, each time the CPU spikes it loses connection with the 003.

I know the loss of connection thing is a known issue with PT8.1 and 002 / 003s:

http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...34&nStartAt=21

But can anyone tell me in 8.0cs3 for eample is more stable.

Or if digidesign is working to stop the disconnection problem in future updates.

Thanks,

Al

Correct me if i am wrong, but I did not find nebula on the compatibility grid, so it is easily generate the problem you've described. I have a 003, and never had issue with lost connection. Only once, but that was because a incompatible plugin. Try move nebula to the unused plugin folder, and see if the communication lost syndrome is still there.

I get where you're coming from... and yes in effect Nebula IS causing the problem but by spiking the CPU on saving.

I've had plenty of experience of plugins screwing up PT8 without even being present in the session.. this seems to be different. If the known problem of DAE 6097 problem could be solved or is more stable in a different version then I'd be laughing.

Also, although the compatibility grid is set in stone by digi there are many plugins that are not mentioned that either work fine with PT8 or screw it up.

Believe me, I know.

I know you're right, but my system only have absolutely compatible plugs, and I do not experience here the lost communication issue.
Of course, even some os process can be the culprit too. Have you tried onyx to maintain your os?

Thanks for the onyx advise Tamas.. I'll give it a go.. but I've also never experienced loss of communication before too.

Also the CPU spike level during saving isn't an issue below 7 instances of nebula so it doesn't look like a run of the mill incompatibility issue.

I also know of others running nebula on PT HD 8 without this problem... DAE 6097 appears to be reserved for us digi firewire interface users.

I'm having the same problem. I'm loosing communication all the time now. it's just so frustrating and I don't know what's the issue. I've used Pro Tools for 8 years now and this is the [bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep]tiest it's ever been and I have to say that it really sucks... Pro tools it's becoming a pain to deal with now. Even thought the are saying the things are compatible, they are just not. And I'm using 8.0.1

If anyone knows what to do when you get the error number -6097, I'd love to know :)

Thanks a lot people
Pablo

I'm using:

Core Intel Xeon

Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz

Number Of Processors: 2

Total Number Of Cores: 8

L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz

Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05

SMC Version (system): 1.25f4

With Digi 003 Rack

Pro Tools 8

Hi contramano.

Are you saying you're losing connection even though ALL your plugins are qualified with pro tools 8?

I've recreated this problem on a clean install with just nebula added.. making sure that the CPU spikes are a product of this plugin alone.

I'm pretty sure I haven't had disconnections due to unqualified plugins before, just the hang on startup and "unexpectedly quit" classics.

Can you have a look at your CPU usage and see if your CPU is spiking too.

Considering it mentions it's a "known issue" on the digi website:

http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...34&nStartAt=21

maybe digi tech support can say something here.

I've been getting this all the time on both my Macbook Pro and Mac Pro in the studio. I am thinking that mine is cause by IK Miroslav, but I am not sure.

This is very frustrating.

Hi nz,

Can you check if its due to CPU spiking in the system usage display ?

It would be interesting to know if your situation is the same as mine.

Thanks,

Al

I'm getting the lost communication error as well. I know all of my plug-ins are fine. This has only happened since upgrading to 8 and is extremely frustrating. It gets worse as sessions get bigger. It is independent of a plug-in problem. I've troubleshot this down and it's a problem with 8, not plug-ins. Any help from digi would be most appreciated.
