Re: Pro Tools vs. Analog Console Mixing...
One thing they didn't mention is how it was recorded...
The SSL for example has great impact as a recording console. And while there's outboard tools that we use all the time on many chances using a great console for recording keeps the color whether it was mixed ITB or with analog console) One thing I should admit. I took the Hard Rock test. I got all the answers opposite - making the SSL -> ITB & ITB -> SSL. The continuos test went better as I've knew the difference between the 2 so I got 10/13.

Re: Pro Tools vs. Analog Console Mixing...
Hey Tony...Thanks for the link.
I think the test really shows how far the mix buss and plug ins have come. Thats great. Is it just me, or do you think that they should have used the vca's in the comparision? After all, the line amps in a ssl ARE part of the sound. Now I really want those Waves SSL plugs......................... A |

Re: Pro Tools vs. Analog Console Mixing...
Hi,
First, I have to declare I never used a "large format console" to mix a song. I'm a computer guy and always used PT for my work. Here's my report so far on the test : When I read the news, I decided to give it a test at home on my wife's MacBookPro (using the internal speakers of course)... Well, on the first tune I got 8 good answers out of ten and it felt the analog console mix was punchier and cleaner... Ok, that's just my ears & my wife's computer but I had to say it ! I'll try the same test tomorrow in the studio and let you know. Cheers, A. |

Re: Pro Tools vs. Analog Console Mixing...
I got 10 out of 13 on the Alt/Rock Continuous. It was really close but I could definitely hear (at least for the most part) the quality difference between ITB and mixing on an SSL.
Nice test.

Re: Pro Tools vs. Analog Console Mixing...
I'm downloading as I write. Just finished watching the video. And I really had to smile as the long haired guy said: Anyone mixing a lot has always had the chance to experience turning a know on a fader on an EQ thinking it sounds better without that EQ actually being punched in....
I think the video was great... and that it is dealing with a very important topic.

Re: Pro Tools vs. Analog Console Mixing...
Great to have Digi's help providing some good information to help sell people/cleints on the fact ProTools ITB does a great job. I just downloaded the rock file and can't hear the difference with my Westone in-ears on my computer, I will listen again when back in the studio. Even if there is a difference, ProTools sounds great (good enough) so at this point the focus that truly makes a song is the musical ideas and the source sounds. BTW I do fly dates with a national act and have been mixing on many different live consoles, including the Digidesign Venue, which seems to sound best over the Yamaha 1D and 5D Digital consoles, and is nicer to mix on.
