Default Got new MacBook, need some advice

hi everybody,

I finally could afford a Macbook 1,83 C2D for mobile work and recording.
Got myself PTMP7, too (it´s still in the mail, though )

ok so I´d like to know what you Book users do when working stationary with your Laptop.

With the beautyful but old Pismo G3 I always took out the Battery, so that it wasn´t constantly charged and got it´capacity killed by this.

What´s the advice for the new generation of laptops?

and about Tiger: is there a way to disable dashboard?
Any futher optimzation advices? (besides maxing the RAM and an external HD )

thanks in advance,
m.

Hey,

I'm not sure EXACTLY how the Macbook should be used, but from what I have heard, in general laptop batteries should be completely emptied from time to time. I recently got a Macbook myself (hooray to us! ) and that is how I will do it. Most of the time I'll be using the adapter though.

When there's no battery, the Macbook works in CPU Safe Mode.
You get the speedstepping to 1Ghz instead of 1.83/2 Ghz per core.

Keep the battery inside.

AFAIK, you can download a script somewhere to disable Dashboard, but it isn't necessary. When not launched it uses nearly no RAM and CPU. The only problem is the default shortcut keys for Dashboard and Exposé when using Pro Tools. I just changed these keys to CTRL + F12 etc. and everything works fine.

Leave the battery in... It won't hurt to let it drain down from time to time, either. Try this for Dashboard! Works on my G5, though I haven't got it installed on my MBP... but I can't see how running it with the intel processor would be a problem.

Dashboard

If you are having performance issues with Pro Tools, you might also try disabling the Dashboard for Tiger.

How to disable Dashboard

1) Open Terminal and type:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

2) once that is done you need to "restart" the dock by typing:

killall Dock
(make sure you get the capital 'D')

How to enable Dashboard
