Re: Windows keeps changing my default interface setting
Two things you can try here.
One is to make sure you are using the latest drivers for your onboard audio hardware. If not, update the drivers. Second. Do you have speakers or headphones or something plugged into whatever you are setting as the default device? If not, that may be your problem. A lot of the newer motherboard audio devices have automatic jack detection, which looks to see if the current, default audio device has something hooked up to it. When your system boots, if it doesn't think the default device is actually being used, it will default to the next one, which in your case is the Fast Track. So, you may want to try setting your default device to the onboard audio, then connect some speakers to it and see if your problem goes away. |

Re: Windows keeps changing my default interface setting
I do have the jacks of the mobo audio output connected to an input channel of Mackie mixer.
I resinstalled the mobo drivers, and the device manager claims I have the latest. But I think you are on to something. So now I disabled one of the two the audio devices that shows up. So now the only one that is enabled is the one in use (VIA). So far so good. I have the VIA device set as default. I can open PT in any sample rate, stream audio no problem, and the machine has not switched the default setting yet.

Re: Windows keeps changing my default interface setting
OK. It's been a few weeks with no problems. Today, something changed the default audio device back to the Ultra 8R.

Re: Windows keeps changing my default interface setting
Yes I do.
And since y last post, Windows has not changed the default device. But I also see that no new updates were added since 15 May too. Hmmm....

Re: Windows keeps changing my default interface setting
Do you know what the "default audio device" is?
Okay, I'll help...it's the device Windows uses to play audio when you don't tell it to use something else. If something wants Windows to play audio, it goes to the default audio device. If there is no default audio device, Windows will look for ANY audio device and make it the default audio device. Pop quiz... You have three audio devices, named 1, 2, and 3. You have Device 2 set as your default audio device. You disable Device 1 and Device 2. You play a YouTube video and hear sound. Which device is now your default audio device? And like with every other pop quiz, there's a Bonus Question... Does Pro Tools even give a wooly rat's ass what your default audio device is? And JFTR...everything you need to know is in this post...

I learned never to say "never" a long time ago, but I've not heard of such a thing in my 25 years in IT (exclusively MS-DOS and Windows). My own music computer has been running for four years with all onboard sound devices disabled, and the only speakers are the ones connected to my 003 Rack. My 003 is my "default audio device"...that's how I listen to YouTube and CD's...no problems yet...
